Alpha Quadrant
- Earth (Capital world): Homeworld of humanity and seat of the United Federation of Planets, founded in San Francisco in 2161. Starfleet Headquarters and Starfleet Academy stand beside the Golden Gate, and the Federation President has an office in Paris.
- Vulcan (Species homeworld): A hot, arid world of red deserts and mountains about 16 light years from Earth, homeworld of the Vulcans, who tamed their violent emotions through the logic taught by Surak. A founding member of the Federation, and the homeworld of Spock's father, Sarek.
- Andoria (Species homeworld): An icy moon of a ringed gas giant, homeworld of the blue-skinned, antennaed Andorians and the pale Aenar, who live in cities beneath its frozen surface. Long rivals of the Vulcans, the Andorians became founding members of the Federation.
- Tellar Prime (Species homeworld): Homeworld of the Tellarites, a stout, gruff people for whom a good argument is a sport. A founding member of the Federation, and its sun is the real star 61 Cygni, about 11 light years from Earth.
- Wolf 359 (Battle site): A red dwarf star less than 8 light years from Earth, where Starfleet threw an armada of 39 starships against a single Borg cube in 2367.
- Risa (Planet): A tropical pleasure planet kept warm and sunny by a weather control system. Starfleet crews take their shore leave there, and a horga'hn on display means its owner is looking for jamaharon.
- Betazed (Species homeworld): Homeworld of the telepathic Betazoids, among them Counselor Deanna Troi and her mother, Lwaxana.
- Trill (Species homeworld): Homeworld of the Trill, some of whom are joined with long-lived symbionts that pass from host to host and carry the memories of every life. Jadzia and Ezri Dax both carry the Dax symbiont.
- Deneb IV (Planet): Home of Farpoint Station, a remarkably convenient base that the Bandi offer to the Federation, and the first mission of Picard's Enterprise-D.
- Talos IV (Planet): A barren world whose big-brained Talosians live underground and can make anyone see whatever they wish. After Captain Pike's visit, Starfleet's General Order 7 forbids any contact with it, on pain of death.
- Ceti Alpha V (Planet): A harsh, untamed world where Kirk leaves Khan Noonien Singh and his followers to make a life for themselves.
- Genesis planet (Planet): A brand-new world born in the Mutara Nebula from the Genesis Device, which Carol Marcus and her son David built to bring life to lifeless planets.
- Cestus III (Planet): A Federation outpost on the edge of Gorn space, wiped out by the Gorn in 2267. Kirk chases the raiders until the Metrons stop both ships and make him fight the Gorn captain hand to hand.
- Veridian III (Planet): A rocky, lifeless world where Dr Tolian Soran will do anything to reach the Nexus, a ribbon of energy where time has no meaning.
- Ba'ku (Planet): A peaceful world in the Briar Patch whose rings give off metaphasic radiation that keeps its 600 Ba'ku settlers young.
- Bajor (Species homeworld): Homeworld of the deeply spiritual Bajorans, occupied by the Cardassians for about fifty years until 2369. They worship the Prophets, who live in the nearby wormhole, and call Benjamin Sisko their Emissary.
- Deep Space 9 (Space station): A station built by Bajoran slave labour during the occupation to refine uridium ore, which Starfleet runs with the Bajorans from 2369. Moved to the mouth of the newly found Bajoran wormhole, it becomes the gateway to the Gamma Quadrant and a front line of the Dominion War.
- Bajoran wormhole (Spatial anomaly): The only known stable wormhole, found in 2369. It links the Bajoran system to the Idran system 70,000 light years away in the Gamma Quadrant, and the beings who live inside it, outside linear time, are the Bajorans' Prophets.
- Cardassia Prime (Capital world): Capital of the Cardassian Union, a world poor in resources whose military state and its Obsidian Order expanded by conquering their neighbours, Bajor among them.
- The Badlands (Spatial anomaly): A region of violent plasma storms near the Cardassian border, where the Maquis hide their ships. Voyager vanishes there in 2371 while chasing a Maquis raider.
- Chin'toka (Battle site): A Cardassian system guarded by orbital weapon platforms, fought over in the Dominion War.
- Ferenginar (Capital world): Capital of the Ferengi Alliance, a world where it almost never stops raining. The Grand Nagus presides over a society built on profit and the Rules of Acquisition.
- United Federation of Planets (Territory): An alliance of more than 150 member worlds spread across some 8,000 light years, founded in 2161 by Earth, Vulcan, Andoria and Tellar. Starfleet explores and defends it. Earth sits near its edge, under 90 light years from Qo'noS, and its full shape here is a guess.
- Cardassian Union (Territory): A military state ruled from Cardassia Prime, which occupied Bajor and fought a long border war with the Federation before joining the Dominion in 2373.
Beta Quadrant
- Binary stars (Battle site): A binary star system on the edge of Klingon space, where Michael Burnham's Shenzhou finds a mysterious object and the Klingons are waiting.
- Organia (Planet): A quiet farming world on the border with the Klingon Empire, which both sides want when war breaks out in 2267.
- Qo'noS (Capital world): Homeworld of the Klingons and capital of the Klingon Empire, ruled by the High Council and its Chancellor from the Great Hall in the First City. The explosion of its moon Praxis in 2293 drives the Empire to make peace with the Federation.
- Khitomer (Planet): A Klingon world near the Romulan border. The Khitomer Accords between the Klingons and the Federation are signed there in 2293, and in 2346 Romulans massacre its outpost, killing Worf's parents.
- Romulus (Capital world): Capital of the Romulan Star Empire, whose people left Vulcan long ago rather than accept Surak's logic. Its twin world Remus is mined by the Reman slaves the Romulans look down on.
- Nimbus III (Planet): A desert colony in the Neutral Zone, set up jointly by the Federation, the Klingons and the Romulans. By 2287 it is a forgotten backwater, and Sybok takes its three envoys hostage to lure a starship there.
- Delphic Expanse (Spatial anomaly): A region about 50 light years from Earth wrapped in thermobaric clouds and spatial anomalies. In 2153 Archer's Enterprise goes in to find the Xindi, who have attacked Earth.
- Coppelius (Planet): A hidden world in the Ghulion system, where a colony of androids lives in secret after the Federation bans synthetic life.
- System J-25 (Borg site): A system 7,000 light years beyond Federation space, where Q flings the Enterprise-D in 2365 so that it meets the Borg for the first time. Whole cities have been scooped off the surface of its sixth planet.
- Klingon Empire (Territory): A warrior empire bound by honour and ruled from Qo'noS by the High Council. An enemy of the Federation through much of the 23rd century, it becomes an ally after the Khitomer Accords of 2293.
- Romulan Star Empire (Territory): A secretive, militaristic empire whose cloaked warbirds watch the Neutral Zone. Its rulers sit in the Senate on Romulus, and its intelligence service is the Tal Shiar.
Gamma Quadrant
- Idran system (Star system): A trinary star system 70,000 light years from Bajor, at the Gamma Quadrant end of the Bajoran wormhole. Every Dominion ship that comes into the Alpha Quadrant passes through it.
- Founders' homeworld (Capital world): A rogue planet covered by the Great Link, an ocean of shapeshifting Changelings. Persecuted by 'solids' for thousands of years, the Founders built the Dominion so that no one could threaten them again.
- The Dominion (Territory): An empire in the Gamma Quadrant run for the shapeshifting Founders by the cloned Vorta and enforced by the Jem'Hadar soldiers, who are bred to depend on the drug ketracel-white.
Delta Quadrant
- Ocampa (Species homeworld): A desert world whose people, the Ocampa, live underground and only for about nine years. In 2371 the Caretaker's array above it pulls Voyager 70,000 light years from home.
- Talax (Species homeworld): Homeworld of the Talaxians, Neelix among them. In their war with the Haakonians a metreon cascade wiped out the people of its moon Rinax, Neelix's family among them.
- Rift to fluidic space (Spatial anomaly): Where the Borg tear their way into fluidic space, a realm of organic fluid, and meet Species 8472, the first enemy they cannot assimilate.
- Borg Unicomplex (Borg site): The heart of the Borg Collective, a complex of thousands of linked structures at least 600 km across, home to hundreds of cubes and the Borg Queen.
- Borg transwarp hub (Borg site): One of six hubs whose transwarp conduits let Borg ships reach every quadrant within minutes, hidden inside a nebula.
- Borg space (Territory): Vast stretches of the Delta Quadrant held by the Borg Collective, a cybernetic hive that assimilates whole species and adds their biological and technological distinctiveness to its own. Resistance is futile.
- Kazon space (Territory): Space fought over by the Kazon sects, who overthrew their Trabe masters and now fight each other for water and technology. They harry Voyager through its first two years in the Delta Quadrant.
- Vidiian Sodality (Territory): Home of the Vidiians, a people ravaged for centuries by the phage, a disease that eats away their bodies. To survive they take organs from anyone they catch, and Voyager's crew are tempting targets.
- Krenim Imperium (Territory): An empire whose scientist Annorax builds a timeship that can strike at history itself. Voyager lives through a Year of Hell in its space.
- Hirogen hunting grounds (Territory): Space roamed by the Hirogen, nomadic hunters who live for the chase and keep their prey's bones as trophies. Voyager uses their ancient relay network to send its first message home in 2374.
Galactic core
- Sha Ka Ree (Planet): A planet at the centre of the galaxy, behind the Great Barrier, that legend calls Sha Ka Ree, the place of creation. Sybok hijacks the Enterprise-A to go and find it.
Borders and barriers
- Galactic barrier: A wall of energy around the rim of the galaxy. Crossing it in 2265 kills nine of Kirk's crew and gives Gary Mitchell fast-growing psychic powers. In 3190 Discovery crosses it to meet Species 10-C.
- Great Barrier: A barrier of energy around the galactic core that no ship was thought able to cross, until Sybok takes the Enterprise-A through it in 2287.
- Romulan Neutral Zone: A buffer of space between the Federation and the Romulans, set up after the Earth–Romulan War ended in 2160. Entering it is an act of war. The Treaty of Algeron reaffirms it in 2311, after which the Romulans stay unseen on their side until 2364.
- Demilitarized Zone: A strip along the Federation–Cardassian border, set up by treaty in 2370, where both sides' colonies were left in the other's territory. Federation colonists who refused to leave formed the Maquis.
